![]() I changed the entire way I thought about food after losing such a tremendous amount of weight. I’m not interested in prizing or pitying a food based on its nutrition label. People say it all the time, mostly because it just sounds so perfect, so peachy, but I truly don’t like to label things good or bad. I’m setting you free.īecause if you didn’t know this, that deep frying, if done properly, is not calorically and nutritionally devastating, then this will change your view of all food. I’m not entirely advocating throwing out your steamer, your roasting pan, all your stainless pots and pans, and setting up a deep fry station in your kitchen (though goodness that sounds worthwhile). ![]() Some foods – such as potatoes or whole, skin-on poultry – have a natural coating and do not require breading or battering.” The effect of these is that the outside of the food becomes crispy and browned, while the inside becomes tender, moist, and steamed. Some fried foods are given a coating of batter or breading prior to frying. The correct frying temperature depends on the thickness and type of food, but in most cases it lies between 175 and 190 ☌ (345–375 ☏). However, if the food is cooked in the oil for too long, much of the water will be lost and the oil will begin to penetrate the food. As long as the oil is hot enough and the food is not immersed in the oil for too long, oil penetration will be confined to the outer surface. The hot oil heats the water within the food, steaming it from the inside out oil cannot go against the direction of this powerful flow because (due to its high temperature) the water vapor pushes the bubbles toward the surface. “ If performed properly, deep-frying does not make food excessively greasy, because the moisture in the food repels the oil. Here’s what you need to know about deep frying, myths be damned: When you drop foods into a pan or pot with oil that isn’t sufficiently hot, the food soaks in the oil, it absorbs it rather than simply forming a crisp bubbling crust and keeping the insides moist and untouched. It has to do mostly with the temperature of the oil. Often times shallow frying (generally thought to be healthier because there’s less oil used)- meaning to pan fry a food in a skillet filled with just a covering of oil- allows the food to soak up more oil than deep frying. Truth: As long as you’re using a good quality oil, not over using that oil for multiple frying attempts, and as long as you know the ingredients you’re breading or battering your food in, there’s nothing wrong with deep frying.įor years after I lost 135lbs, I thought anything fried absorbed gobs upon gobs of oil, and the exciting reality is- that just isn’t always so. I’d like to deep fry my vitamins, to batter and brown my pineapple tidbits in hot, bubbling fat. There are lots of misconceptions about deep frying.Īnd I, devout deep fry darlin’ that I am, want to put those myths to bed. "n the London production, variations were introduced: a weakening of light and voices in the first repeat, and more so in the second an abridged second opening increasing breathlessness changes in the order of the opening words." The purpose of this is to suggest a gradual winding down of the action for he writes of "the impression of falling off which this would give, with the suggestion of a conceivable dark and silence in the end, or of an indefinite approximating towards it." At the end of this second repeat, the play appears as if it is about to start again for a third time (as in Act Without Words II), but does not get more than a few seconds into it before it suddenly stops. Towards the end of the script, there is the concise instruction: "Repeat play." Beckett elaborates on this in the notes, by saying that the repeat might be varied. ![]() It is one of Beckett's most 'musical' pieces with "a chorus for three voices, orchestration, stage directions concerning tempo, volume and tone, a da capo repeat of the entire action" and a short coda. Each presents his or her own version of the truth told in the past tense and each from his or her respective points of view. ![]() In an almost fugal style the three obsess over the affair. Billie Whitelaw referred to it as "an instrument of torture." The spotlight is in effect the play's fourth character. In this manner the spotlight is "expressive of a unique inquisitor". Beckett writes that this spotlight "provokes" the character's speech, and insists that whenever possible, a single, swivelling light should be used, rather than separate lights switching on and off. They neither acknowledge the existence of the others around them (M: "To think we were never together" ) nor appear aware of anything outside their own being and past (W2: "At the same time I prefer this to. While one is talking the other two are silent and in darkness. The style is reminiscent of Mouth's logorrhoea in Not I, the obvious difference being that these characters constantly use first person pronouns. One character speaks at a time and only when a strong spotlight shines in his or her face. The main part of this play is made up of short, occasionally fragmented sentences spoken in a "apid tempo throughout" "which in his 1978 rehearsals likened to a lawn mower – a burst of energy followed by a pause, a renewed burst followed by another pause." "He wrote each part separately, then interspersed them, working over the proper breaks in the speeches for a long time before he was satisfied." Their "aces so lost to age and aspect as to seem almost part of the urns." Beckett had used similar imagery before, Mahood's jar in The Unnameable, for example, or the dustbins occupied by Nell and Nagg in Endgame.Īt the beginning and end of the play, a spotlight picks out all three faces, and all three characters recite their own lines, in what Beckett terms a "chorus" the effect is unintelligible. ![]() To his right is his wife (W1) or long-time partner. If that is the case, then would it not make a lot of sense to maintain a play log and schedule with a frequency sufficient to minimize the possibility that significant degradation couldn't take place before the owner (monitor) could intervene. My understanding is that the wood slowly over time optimizes itself to the conditions (stress and strain) it is under, and so if the instrument is kept out of tune for a long time, if and when you tune it up to play it, it will not sound as great as if it had been kept tuned up.Įxperts disagree - but this is my experience.Īm I hearing this right? Does the consensus seem to be that in regard to an instrument that isn't being used that the 'Out of sight - Out of mind" syndrome takes its toll in that it may suffer environmental damage which otherwise would be simple enough to avoid if it otherwise would have been more closely monitored? I think it makes a difference in how the wood ages and future playability. I try and keep everything in tune all the time. Even the mandolins I seldom play, I take out once a month and tune up. ![]() I would never de-tune them, except if I am shipping an instrument somewhere. I think unless there is an identified structural issue, archtop mandolins, old and even vintage, are fine with medium strings. If it were mine, I would detune the strings during the "fallow" periods. Leaving the instrrument tuned to pitch will also stress an instrument regardless of string gauge.ĭetuning when you aren't playing can't hurt anything, and leaving it tuned at pitch could stress it and cause problems. Today's medium gauge strings will stress an older instrument, especially if there are any weak joints, glue failing, etc. Many people say that older instruments should be strung with light gauge strings. To be able to make music and share it with you is the greatest honour of my life. Not having live shows to go to these past few years has reminded me how incredibly lucky I am to do what I do. Music is my healer and guide, my redemption and passion. I love old Judy Garland records and earlier this year discovered every RuPaul song that ever existed, which has completely changed my life for the better. I’ve loved it and it is my aim to make sure you hear that love and honesty in the music. Exploring different genres and pushing myself in any way possible. I have written 100’s of songs and taken my creativity to new levels. I’ve been through such a creative shift over the last few years. In “Exit the King” (newly translated by Mr. Roger Jackson/Central Press - Getty Imagesīut there’s another, deeper reason that the moment seems right for “Waiting for Godot” and “Exit the King.” A time of recession and transition when the smoke screen generated by years of frantic getting and spending suddenly evaporates is perhaps exactly the time to contemplate life stripped down to its naked essentials, or what Shakespeare’s Lear called “unaccommodated man.” The last time it was seen on Broadway was 1968, when it ran for 47 performances.Īlec Guinness and Googie Withers in a 1963 production of Eugène Ionescos ∾xit the King at the Royal Court Theater in London. And for New York theatergoers wanting a double dose of existential absurdity, there’s Eugène Ionesco’s “Exit the King,” a short, ruthless and funny study of a decaying monarch in flight from his own death, which opens next month at the Barrymore Theater, in a production from the Australian director Neil Armfield, with a cast led by Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandon. (Lincoln Center Theater’s much publicized Mike Nichols version in 1988, with Steve Martin and Robin Williams, was an Off Broadway production.) Yet this spring Beckett’s mangy, aimless tramps promise to be the It boys of the mainstream English-speaking theater with deluxe productions both on Broadway (opening April 30 at Studio 54, starring Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin, directed by Anthony Page) and in London’s West End (at the Theater Royal Haymarket, starting April 30, with the heavy hitters Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, directed by Sean Mathias). And there you have the entire history of Broadway’s relationship with “Waiting for Godot,” a play that seemed destined to be consigned forever after in New York to small theaters catering to bookish audiences. Marshall, ran for 60 performances and was revived the following year with an all-black cast, when it lasted for a mere six performances. The show, which featured Bert Lahr and E. “Don’t expect this column to explain Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot,’ ” read the first sentence of Brooks Atkinson’s review in The New York Times on April 20, 1956. It’s been more than half a century since “Waiting for Godot,” Samuel Beckett’s watershed portrait of two tramps’ rendezvous with nothingness, was staged at the John Golden Theater, where it was greeted with some respect, some derision and much puzzlement. Is Broadway finally ready to worship Godot? And it is just possible that in the silence of his nonarrival this year, theatergoers who never knew his name, or haven’t thought about him in ages, may hear the sound of their own troubled thoughts quite clearly. The pandemic and the fiscal stress on the industry has made it even harder for those movies to get made.“Let us not then speak ill of our generation, it is not any unhappier than its predecessors. “They’re harder to get off the ground, they’re harder to stay on track. “I’m desperate for small projects,” Nyong’o told THR.
